Musical

Hadestown

Hadestown is a Tony-winning Broadway musical by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin that intertwines two classic Greek myths into a haunting, jazz- and folk-infused tale of love, industrialism, and hope. The show weaves together the tragic romance of Orpheus and Eurydice with the fraught marriage of King Hades and Persephone in a post-apocalyptic, Depression-era setting. Driven by a live onstage band, the score blends New Orleans jazz, blues, and indie folk to tell a timeless story about fighting for a better world even when you know how the story ends. Originally developed as a regional community theatre project in Vermont, Hadestown evolved through a concept album and acclaimed off-Broadway and international productions before opening on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre in 2019. Celebrated for its poetic lyrics, stunning staging, and soul-stirring numbers like 'Wait for Me' and 'Why We Build the Wall', the musical earned eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Combining visceral storytelling with haunting vocal harmonies led by the Fates and Hermes, Hadestown stands as one of the most distinctive and critically lauded works in modern American musical theatre. Its enduring appeal lies in its poignant dual balance of heartbreak and resilience, offering a deeply moving theatrical experience for audiences on Broadway, in London's West End, and across national tours.

Finally got to see Dylan Wood Orpheus and it seems I’ve grown quite fond of him he comes to me as a long lost friend whom I once picked apples with in papa’s orchard. On a more serious note, this is quickly becoming one of my favourite pieces of art of all time. I feel like I’m endlessly unlocking new things after each new performance, and I love how much the actors are encouraged to have their own interpretation of the material. On a less serious note, Jaz Eurydice and their mullet/rat tail and the way Orpheus would play with it when they embraced…. My heart!!! Welcome back Katniss and Peeta or whatever.

Internally hooting and hollering every time Dónal hit a high note, my favourite Orpheus. I think I ascended every time he went la la la. Idk why he was performing like there was a gun to his head (positive, his Orpheus CRASHES OUT) but I was so into it. Melanie La Barrie is the best Hermes forever. So warm, such a twinkle in her eye, such a powerful voice and commanding presence. Grace Hodgett-Young is a fantastic Eurydice. Tough exterior hiding such vulnerability, a joy to watch. Holy trinity?

Mancunian Orpheus is so cheeky I loved him. Love hearing northern accents on that stage. Some of the new cast are still settling into their roles so I’m really excited to see them again in a few months. Alastair Parker’s Hades is like a bull in a china shop for the entirety of act one, in the best way. Will defo be in conversation for my favourite Hades. Rachel Adedeji very good <3

Desmonda Eurydice is gonna be difficult to top. Was so thrilled when she got cast in this after Aladdin. Her Flowers and Wait for Me Reprise from the front row went crazy. Chris Jarman delivers that “I missed you” like his entire paycheck depends on it. Allie Daniel <3

Chris Jarman’s diva walk in Chant II will forever have a place in my heart. Swing heavy show with only 3 (male) workers who did an incredible job, was like Orpheus was in a boy band and it rocked. Thrilled to see Desmonda again before she leaves!
